Overview

Trained expertise in community leadership and social development is increasingly needed in a rapidly changing world. A multi-disciplinary understanding of the issues and challenges surrounding the practice of community leadership and social development is crucial, particularly for persons working within the civil and social service sectors. This programme reflects Singapore University of Social Sciences' commitment to support the growing need for effective community leaders who can play a progressive role in Singapore's social development. Taught by a team of distinguished academics and professionals, the programme combines academic rigour with practical policy-focused skills development.

Programme Structure

Students complete six compulsory core courses, four electives (to be chosen from a basket of electives) and a dissertation (which can be substituted by two additional courses, subject to approval). Upon successful completion of the six core courses, a Graduate Diploma will be awarded by Singapore University of Social Sciences.

Courses may also be taken individually as a graduate certification course (limited places available).

This programme will be especially relevant to those seeking to develop advanced knowledge and expertise in community leadership and social development for occupations within the civil and social services, the social sciences, and those who wish to obtain a specialised qualification for their current professions.

Graduates will be able to assume leadership roles with strong organisational capabilities in a range of careers - as community leaders, grassroots leaders, planners, policy makers, civil society actors, social workers, counsellors, unionists, managers, teachers, trainers and researchers. Students who are already in such careers will add value to their existing work with this specialised qualification and professional upgrading. This programme also provides those who wish to switch careers with expanded options for taking up different types of work related to community leadership and social development as an increasingly relevant field in Singapore.

  1. How many intakes are there in a year for Master of Community Leadership and Social Development (MCLSD)?
    One intake a year; every July.

  2. What is the duration to complete the MCLSD?
    The programme takes an estimated 2 years to complete.

  3. What are the minimum and maximum durations of MCLSD?
    MCLSD is a minimum 2-year programme and student may stretch to a maximum of 4 years to complete.

  4. How many courses do students take in each semester?
    Students are recommended to complete 3 courses per semester.

  5. When are the lessons scheduled?
    Lessons are mostly scheduled on 4 Saturdays per course from 8.30am to 5.30pm, with a lunch break of an hour. However, the classes may be scheduled on other days of the week when necessary.

  6. Will I be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Community Leadership and Social Development if I were to complete the six compulsory core courses?
    Yes, you will be awarded a Graduate Diploma awarded by Singapore University of Social Sciences.
