UniSIM Launches First Local University Part-Time Accountancy Degree

Programme offers working professionals a unique chance to upgrade

SIM University (UniSIM) will be launching the only part-time Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) degree programme by any local university in Singapore in 2009. This is also the first accountancy programme to systematically collaborate with industry players to build a pool of highly qualified professionals.

The new UniSIM programme is aimed at those currently performing accounting and auditing functions in the industry and who may wish to upgrade their skills as well as qualification to a degree level. It is also targeted at those seeking a mid-career switch.

According to Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President, UniSIM, "There is a strong demand for accounting and auditing professionals in the market that is not adequately met by supply. Such professionals are also eagerly sought after by, and drained to, fast developing economies like China because of Singapore's reputed honesty and integrity in the profession."

Viable Pathway for Working Professionals to Upgrade

Currently, no other local university offers a part-time accountancy degree programme in Singapore. People who wish to pursue a local accountancy degree can only do so by giving up their jobs to do it on a full-time basis. The new UniSIM accountancy programme will provide a very attractive and viable pathway for working professionals who wish to obtain a degree in this discipline.

The part-time programme is unique because it is the first to actively and systematically engage industry players to ensure that the curriculum is highly relevant and meet industry needs.UniSIM has partnered with five well-known public accounting firms to run the programme:

a. Don Ho & Associates
b. Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton
c. KPMG
d. Nexus Public Accounting Corporation

e. RSM Chio Lim

In this partnership, the accounting firms will send their senior staff to augment the teaching staff on the programme. Senior staff from the Tax Academy of Singapore will also teach in the programme.

The firms will also provide industrial attachment or job opportunities for UniSIM students to work and learn at the same time. These are designed to enrich their learning experience. Such arrangements are also a plus to students who can enjoy enhanced employment opportunities with these firms upon graduation.

"The benefits to students are twofold: Students will be able to learn firsthand from the experience of senior practitioners and see how knowledge and theories are applied to provide solutions to real world challenges. Such industry placements also ensure that there will be no lapse between learning and application as students will be able to learn today at UniSIM and apply tomorrow at their workplace," said Professor Koh Hian Chye, Dean, School of Business, UniSIM.

UniSIM Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) Degree

The new accountancy degree programme to be awarded by UniSIM will be launched in 2009, upon accreditation by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) and Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). The accreditation application is in progress and when successful, will grant UniSIM graduates equal status to those enjoyed by NTU, NUS and SMU accountancy graduates. As with all UniSIM degree programmes which allow working professionals to learn at their own pace, students can take up to eight years to complete their studies. Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents who are eligible will also enjoy the 40% and 20% tuition fee subsidy from the government.

Graduates from the UniSIM accountancy degree programme will also be granted advanced standing for admission into the first Master in Taxation programme to be launched in Southeast Asia by UniSIM in collaboration with the Tax Academy in 2009.
