SIM University Now Accepts WSQ Diploma As An Alternative Entry Criteria Into Their Degree Programme

SIM University (UniSIM) is recognising the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) as an alternative to traditional qualifications for entry into its undergraduate programmes.

As partners in education and training for adult workers, both UniSIM and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today, to establish pathways for WSQ Diploma graduates, who meet UniSIM's entry requirements, to pursue academic programmes in UniSIM.

The first pathway offers graduates of the WSQ Diploma in Retail Management a route to pursue the UniSIM Bachelor of Science in Marketing programme. This arrangement also allows the WSQ graduate to be exempted from up to four modules in the programme. UniSIM, Singapore’s first private university dedicated to provide upgrading opportunities for working professionals, is the only university here to embrace WSQ qualifications.

Mr Ong Ye Kung, Chief Executive of WDA, said, "We are very happy that UniSIM recognises WSQ as an entry qualification into its programme. This is an important development for continuing education and training, which keeps our workforce competitive and relevant to the economy. In this aspect, both UniSIM and WDA share a common mission, to reach out to adult learners and fulfil their learning and upgrading needs."

Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of UniSIM, said, "With the optimistic economic outlook, the growth potential for the retail sector is tremendous. To tap this potential to make Singapore one of the top shopping and entertainment destinations in the world, it is important to have retail managers in Singapore upgrade their skills and knowledge to ensure a regular flow of innovative ideas and concepts to maintain our competitive advantage."

He added, "UniSIM is pleased to work with WDA to cultivate a new generation of retail managers who possess formal and professional qualification to serve as the ideas powerhouse to move our retail industry forward."

In addition to the WSQ Diploma, interested applicants for the UniSIM programme will also need at least five ‘O’ level passes or equivalent, must be at least 21 years old and have two years of working experience.
