SIM University Celebrates Its Fifth Pioneering Year With 1,400 Graduates At Convocation

  1. SIM University (UniSIM) celebrates the graduation of more than 1,400 students from its class of 2010 over four convocation ceremonies to be held from 6 to 7 October 2010. This convocation also marks UniSIM's fifth anniversary since it was set up in 2005 as Singapore's first and only private university dedicated to working adults.

  2. At the convocation, UniSIM will see its first cohort of graduands from the School of Human Development and Social Services' Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Counselling and Bachelor in General Studies programmes. The latter two programmes are the first local degrees of its kind. The first cohort from UniSIM's postgraduate programmes Master of Environmental Science and Master of Taxation – will be graduating as well.

  3. Gracing the opening session is Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports. Seventeen graduands will receive awards from Mrs Yu-Foo for outstanding academic performance. Among them are the top three graduands from the Bachelor of Social Work who will be presented with the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) Awards for academic achievements. The top three graduands from the Bachelor of Counselling will receive the inaugural Anthony Yeo Memorial Awards. This award has been set up by UniSIM in honour of the late Mr Anthony Yeo, the man hailed as Singapore's 'Father of Counselling', for his pioneering role in the profession's development. Some of his achievements included founding and serving as clinical director of the Counselling and Care Centre, Singapore's first counselling centre, and helping to establish the Samaritans of Singapore, a suicide prevention agency.

  4. Since its inception in 2005, UniSIM has established itself as a choice tertiary institution among working adults, providing adult learners with the opportunities to pursue lifelong learning and higher education while balancing their careers, family and social responsibilities. To date, the university has over 11,000 students enrolled in over 40 academic programmes through its four schools School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, School of Human Development and Social Services, and School of Science and Technology.
