SIM University Accountancy Degree Receives Recognition From ACRA

SIM University Hopes To Help Boost Supply Of Accounting Professionals

  1. With effect from 22 May 2012, SIM University's (UniSIM) Bachelor of Accountancy Degree (BACC) is recognised by the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA). This means that graduates from UniSIM's BACC programme will have satisfied the qualification requirement which is the first step towards registration as a Public Accountant under the Accountants Act (Cap. 2).

  2. UniSIM is the only local university in Singapore to offer an accountancy degree at the undergraduate level to working adults. The other local university accountancy degrees similarly recognised are NUS, NTU and SMU.

  3. Graduates of UniSIM's BACC programme currently are already exempted from some professional examinations by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)1.

Accountancy Hub: More Accountants Needed

  1. With Singapore aspiring to become an accountancy hub for the Asia-Pacific region by 2020, there will be an increase in demand for accountants. Each year, the three public universities produce more than 1,000 accountancy graduates2.

  2. The recognition of UniSIM's BACC programme could potentially help boost the supply of public accountants by offering aspiring working adults an avenue to join the ranks of the public accountancy profession3.

Industry Relevance

  1. As a university dedicated to working adults, UniSIM's BACC programme is targeted at working executives and mature learners who are in the accounting industry and aspire to be accountants in Singapore. Professionals from other fields keen on making a mid-career switch to accounting-related employment can also benefit from this programme.

  2. The BACC programme, a direct honours programme, is designed with a balanced approach to provide students with strong academic and professional training in accounting, as well as general business knowledge. The programme is developed with the support of industry partners Don Ho & Associates, Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton, KPMG, Nexus Public Accounting Corporation and RSM Chio Lim. It is taught by faculty with globally-recognised qualifications and extensive experience in academia and industry. Care has also been taken to ensure that the programme is industry relevant, from the appointment of industry leaders on the programme advisory panel, to the involvement of senior staff from accounting firms in the development and presentation of courses.

MOE Subsidies

  1. UniSIM is the only Singapore university dedicated to working adults and adult learners. A government subsidy of up to 55% of the total programme fee is given to Singaporeans who are enrolled in its undergraduate programmes.

  2. UniSIM on its own also offers scholarships, sponsorships and study grants. Two of its industry partners for the BACC programme - RSM Chio Lim LLP and Nexia TS Public Accounting Corporation - are sponsoring a total of two study grants for the July 2012 semester for deserving current or new students with financial needs.
