SIM To Double Its Campus Size By 2014

New Campus to provide a dynamic and holistic learning experience for new generation of learners

Just eight years since it moved into its current home at Clementi, the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) is already planning to more than double its Clementi campus size in 5 years' time.

SIM has announced a Master Plan to further expand its Clementi campus at a platform topping up ceremony on October 9. The ceremony was officiated by President S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan, and attended by some 200 guests. 

The SIM Campus Development Master Plan which will cost $300 million and expected to be completed by 2014 will be rolled out in two phases. It will render an additional 56,000 square meters of space, more than double its current campus, thus consolidating its position as the largest private tertiary institution in Singapore, both in terms of total campus size and student enrolment. 

SIM's plan to increase its campus size is made in anticipation of the steady growth in its student population as it looks forward to playing a greater role as a leading higher education and lifelong learning institute. 

The extended campus will cater primarily to the growing needs of the SIM University (UniSIM). As the only local private tertiary institution recognised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to award its own degrees, UniSIM plays a unique role in catering to the tertiary education and lifelong learning needs of working adults. Offering over 40 programmes from four schools, its range of relevant and recognised graduate and postgraduate degree programmes offered through a flexible mode of study are fast gaining popularity with working adults who are looking for higher qualifications, career advancement or self-fulfilment. 

With the added incentive of a MOE subsidy of up to 40% for its students introduced in 2008, UniSIM has seen a substantial jump in its enrolment. It now has some 10,000 students, compared to 8,000 in 2007. This number is expected to grow by another 40% to 14,000 by 2020 as continuing education and training continues to play a pivotal role in Singapore's economic growth. UniSIM currently caps its annual intake to only about half of applications received due to limited facilities. 

The new campus extension will allow UniSIM to meet increased and future demand for places which it is not able to meet at the moment. To support UniSIM's growth in student population, more staff will also be required and the new extension will allow UniSIM to house staff from its four academic schools within its own premises. 

The concept behind the SIM Campus Development Master Plan is that of a learning environment with the campus as the "third teacher" to engage students. It provides interactive exchange zones, as well as indoor and outdoor sporting and social interaction spaces to encourage the exchange of ideas, enhance learning beyond physical confines and enrich learning experiences. 

Phase One of the Master Plan has commenced in December 2008 with the construction of a six-storey building adjacent to the existing campus. To be completed by early 2011, the Phase One building will render 28,000 square meters of space to provide for a totally wireless environment that comprises a student hub a living stage for students' sporting, artistic and social activities, students' lounge and private study areas. There will also be a library extension that incorporates a cyberstation, an interactive zone, gaming room and an alfresco study area overlooking the open courtyard to foster informal discussions. 

It will also have 27 lecture theatres, 32 seminar rooms and 4 computer labs, all equipped and wired with state-of-the-art technology to enhance learning for a new generation of IT-savvy learners. 

The new building will incorporate eco-friendly materials, green features and technology to make it an environmentally friendly and sustainable building.
