First Batch Of Graduates From The SIM University-Beijing Normal University

On 14 March 2008, the pioneer class of 35 students will receive their Master of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature (MACL), jointly awarded by SIM University (UniSIM) and Beijing Normal University (BNU). 

Another 69 will also graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature (BACL). This 69 inclusive, the BACL programme has produced a total of 538 graduands in 6 classes since its inception in 2002. A Bachelor of Arts in a Chinese-related programme is a prerequisite for the MACL programme. 

A total of 104 graduands (35 MACL and 69 BACL) from the 2007 class will be graduating at the ceremony. They include Chinese language teachers and tutors, media professionals, executives, and English-educated students who wanted to enhance their grasp of the Chinese language. 

President of UniSIM, Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, says: "The first Masters graduating class is a mark of our students' success in deepening and broadening their scope of knowledge. The knowledge and experience will be an asset in the workplace now that Singapore's businesses are heading aggressively into the Chinese market." 

The Vice President of BNU, Chen Guang Ju, echoes: "With the developments in China and increasing influence of the Chinese language in the world today, the skills you have acquired would bring you valuable opportunities in addition to the joy you have experienced. It gives you the essential skills to advance your career, cultivate your character and to embrace the globalised world." 

Mr Seng Han Thong, Member of Parliament for Yio Chu Kang Constituency and Assistant Secretary General, National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) will be the Guest-of-Honour at the graduation ceremony. Other guests include Mr Zhang Guosen, Second Secretary (Education), Embassy of the People's Republic of China; Professor Chen Guang Ju, Vice President of BNU; and three accompanying BNU faculty and staff.
