Building An Inclusive And Cohesive Society - Degree Programme Sponsorship For PA Grassroots Leaders

  1. On 19 March 2013, the People's Association (PA) and SIM University (UniSIM) will be signing their second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for academic collaboration. This MOU provides opportunities for five grassroots leaders to equip themselves in playing a bigger role in building an inclusive and cohesive society, by the sponsorship of 80% of their continual education in any of the degree programmes offered by UniSIM. The signing will take place at the National Community Leadership Institute, the community leadership development arm of the People's Association.

  2. This comes as an extension of the close partnership between the PA and UniSIM, stemming from the first MOU signed on 18 February 2012 launching the Singapore's first Master of Community Leadership and Social Development, aimed at meeting the growing need for trained expertise in this area amidst a fast changing social and cultural landscape in Singapore.

  3. Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chief Executive Director of PA, shared, "PA is very pleased to partner UniSIM. UniSIM's mission of excellence in lifelong education is synonymous to PA's belief in continually developing our people so that we can meet the increasingly challenging mission of building and bridging communities across all races, ages and living in all housing estates. UniSIM's sponsorship of their Bachelor Degree programmes for grassroots leaders not only recognises their hard work and dedication to the community but more importantly, it provides opportunities for them to continually improve their knowledge and skills in building greater social capital in the community."

  4. Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, President of SIM University, shared, "Our society is becoming more complex and diverse. We need a new breed of community leaders who not only have effective leadership skills, but possess broad based knowledge to tackle manifold issues. UniSIM is privileged to partner PA to contribute towards this national agenda by providing wider access to continuous education and training (CET) for our community leaders."

  5. The sponsorship will cover up to 80% of total course fees for five PA grassroots leaders (GRLs), each year for three years, for their Bachelor's degree programmes offered by UniSIM. Interested applicants should speak to their Constituency Offices.
