How It Works

How online learning works

SUSS Online courses feature an assortment of virtual learning tools, interactive activities and other resources that are designed to keep students fully engaged in an exclusive online learning environment.

Learning Management System

Our online courses are delivered via the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). To ensure smooth access to your online course after enrolment, all you have to do is to check that your computer is correctly configured and meets the minimum technical requirements as follow:

Operating system

Windows 10, Mac OSX or higher

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari

Microsoft Office (2010 or later), VitalSource Bookshelf Software (for eTextbook), Acrobat Reader

Broadband Wired or Wireless Card

Learning Materials

The learning materials for your study are included as part of every course. These materials are carefully selected, and they serve as the key source of information for you to understand key concepts related to the course.

The eTextbook serves as the main study material. You can access your eTextbook for the respective courses through your laptops or mobile devices. This downloadable resource will enable you to access and learn anytime, anywhere even when there is no network connectivity. You can also personalise your learning by bookmarking pages, highlighting pertinent points, adding notes and collaborating with your peers by sharing your annotated notes.

Chunked lectures are recorded narrations of PowerPoint presentations delivered as video streaming files, screen captures of instructional videos or other videos created by the faculty. These lectures are beneficial to visual learners and can be used as reviews of important course concepts.

Additional resources are provided for you to explore supplementary content beyond the course materials. These can range from reference books, articles, websites and multimedia content. While useful for the more curious learners, these additional resources are not required to complete the learning activities and assessments.

Learning Activities

In the courses, you will engage in a variety of learning activities to build your knowledge base and develop real-world skills. Activities include discussions, quizzes, and assignments.

Every unit of study includes learning materials that will require you to read, watch or listen.

  • Read - This is mainly from the selected chapters in the textbook. Reading materials can also come from other selected articles, journals and case studies.
  • Watch and Listen – These are resources that help you strengthen your understanding of the course topics. They can be presented in the form of TED.Ex videos featuring experts or real event podcast interviews.

As you engage in any of the above activities, you can gain the required knowledge, concepts and theories which are relevant to real-world situations and applications. These will prepare you for activities, discussions and assignments in the course.

'Apply your knowledge' activities are knowledge-checking assessment questions and scenarios which are highly relevant to real-world situations. They are designed to help you check your understanding of the unit’s topics and also how they are applied in the real world.

There are graded discussion forum activities throughout the course. Each discussion includes a real-world case study and a series of open-ended questions. Discussion questions are designed to encourage students to explore complex ideas and share their individual views so that they can see the issues from multiple perspectives. Through this collaborative activity, students can co-construct meaning by integrating their knowledge and critical thinking as they exchange their points of view during the discussions.

You will take practice quizzes to assess your knowledge of major concepts to prepare for course activities. In addition, graded quizzes are administered to assess your basic level knowledge of the concepts, theories and knowledge of each unit.

The Group-Based Assignment (GBA) is one of the components that contributes to the Overall Continuous Assessment Score for your online course. The GBA comprises individual and collaborative group work activities, and you are required to actively participate in all activities online.

For most courses, you will sit for a final examination at the end of the semester to assess your knowledge and understanding of the course as a whole. Note that this examination will be administered on campus and it is exactly the same for students taking the online courses and those taking the on-campus (ground) courses.

For other courses, you will need to complete an End-of-Course Assignment (ECA) instead of a final examination. An ECA often takes the form of an individual take-home project or assignment that will be released to you towards the end-of-term of presentation of your course. For more detailed information about the ECA, kindly refer to the course website.

Student Support and Services

Whether you are pursuing an on-campus or a full online course, you will receive the same support and resources that will ensure a conducive learning environment, making your student journey focused and smooth.

While there are no face-to-face sessions in a full online course, guidance and support will be provided by experienced online instructors via weekly virtual office hours, discussion forums and emails. Students can post questions to their instructors via these channels.
