Synopsis

This dissertation course which is on the Honours programmes requires students to apply their sociological knowledge to carry out an independent research project on a topic of their choice.Students have to decide on a topic, frame a research question, review the relevant literature, and prepare a research proposal. In addition, students are required to collect data, conduct appropriate analysis and write up a research report. To allow students to have more time for data collection and analysis, this dissertation course spans over two academic semesters.

Learning Outcome

  • Formulate a research problem of their choice
  • Design a sound theoretical framework and research methodological approach on the chosen topic
  • Assess the relevant literature in a chosen research area
  • Collect primary empirical data for theoretical analysis
  • Analyse and interpret evidence and findings from the independent research project
  • Appraise various theoretical orientations of Sociology and approaches to quantitative and/or qualitative research
  • Formulate their own sociological understanding at an advanced level from an independent research project
  • Organize an independent research project, considering the practical requirements and constraints relevant to such research
  • Defend and present research findings effectively
