Synopsis

Compulsory to students studying the programme at honours level, this course consolidates students' learning and further develops their intellectual capability and curiosity by requiring them to undertake an individual research-based project on topics relating to Security Studies and/ or Counter Terrorism. The course prepare students to conduct independent research in Security Studies and to present the findings of such research in a formal report.

Learning Outcome

  • Compare contemporary debates, theories and methods in political science and security studies.
  • Design a Literature Review in political science (with a focus on security studies).
  • Select a Research Problem in security studies with the supervisor.
  • Hypothesize issues in security studies with the supervisor.
  • Formulate a Research Hypothesis in security studies with the supervisor.
  • Design a Research Question in security studies with the supervisor.
  • Differentiate between a Research Question and a Research Hypothesis.
  • Evaluate a Research Plan in security studies.
  • Construct interviews, focus groups and simple straw polls.
  • Propose a thesis to student peers and supervisors.
  • Analyze public policies with regards to security issues in late modernity.
  • Rate a thesis proposal through group discussion.
  • Practice operational security concepts at the Honours Year level.
  • Appraise work-based problems at the Honours Year level.
  • Demonstrate competence in academic writing (political science honours level).
