Synopsis

Orff-Schulwerk approach advocates music learning through play, and uses activities such as singing, chanting of rhymes, body percussion, improvisation, instrumental playing and movement to experience and learn music concepts. The process, more than the product, allows children to play, create, initiate and demonstrate what they know, understand and apply. The process of teaching and learning in this method includes: Observe, Imitate, Experience, Identify, and Experiment/Explore and Create. Students need to be prepared to come back for the practical assessment which is held outside of the 6 week sessions.

Learning Outcome

  • Discuss the use of rhythmic speech, solfege system to teach simple melodies and folk songs for teaching.
  • Apply Orff sequential processes using hand-held non-pitched and pitched instruments for music teaching.
  • Propose movement activities appropriate for wide-ranging experiences.
  • Execute Orff-Schulwerk accompaniments for simple melodies using Orff Bordun.
  • Demonstrate proper performance technique on soprano recorder, mallet percussion, and hand-held non-pitched percussion instruments.
  • Arrange music used for a lesson in an elemental style for different media.
